Who We Are

The Student Committee for Defense of Political Prisoners (SCDPP) was founded in 1998, in Tehran, Iran. It began with approximately 50 student activists, as the first active organization on political prisoners and student rights in Iran. Gradually, it became a well known human rights group inside the country for its high profile work.

SCDPP promotes human rights values under a democratic society, provides political prisoners and their families with financial and legal support, defends and advocates for political prisoners' rights, and exposes related news without any regard to their political affiliation

Permission was denied by the Iranian authorities to register SCDPP as an NGO, on the grounds that “there are no political prisoners in Iran”, however, the group has worked hard to protect prisoners' right and was recognized as an NGO among Iranians and human rights organization around the globe. Its work included exposing prisoners' harsh condition, special reports on prisoners cases, annual reports, legal services and much more.

Many of its members, including Hassan Zarezadeh Ardeshir, Shiva Nazar Ahari, Saeed Kalanaki, Mohammad Reza Kasrani, Ali Bikas, Naseh Faridi, Kourosh Sehati, Manouchehr Mohammadi, Akbar Mohammadi, and Heshmat Tabarzadi, were arrested and sent to prison, spending months in solitary confinement for their human rights activities. Ali Bikas, Behzad Mehrani and Heshmat Tabarzadi, three of main members of SCDPP who were arrested after the presidential elections, and Behrouz Javid Tehrani who arrested 5 years ago, still remain in prison.

SCDPP is the first organization for political prisoners and has members around the globe and works internationally. Its abroad office will be registered abroad as an international NGO in the near future.

Manouchehr Mohammadi, Hassan zarezadeh Ardeshir, Saeed Kalanaki, Shiva Nazar Ahari and Arsam Azad were the previous directors of the committee.
